What is Dry Eye Syndrome?

Dry eye syndrome is a vision condition that can occur when your eyes do not produce enough tears to stay hydrated, or something goes wrong with the tear production process. Dry eyes can damage your cornea if left untreated, so staying on top of your symptoms is important.

What Are the Symptoms of Dry Eye Syndrome

Dry eye symptoms can result from the normal aging process, exposure to certain environmental conditions, hormonal changes, digital eye strain, and more.

Tear instability can lead to inflammation and lead to dry eyes as well. Your tears are comprised of 3 layers:

  • The oily outer layer
  • The watery middle layer
  • The inner mucus layer

If the glands that produce these elements in your tears become inflamed or are not producing tears properly, dry eye syndrome can occur. This inflammation can also cause meibomian gland dysfunction, which clogs the small glands in your eyelids that produce the oily outer layer of your tears.

Common signs and symptoms of dry eye syndrome can include:

  • Stinging or gritty feeling in the eye
  • Scratchy and uncomfortable eyes
  • Fluctuating vision
  • A burning feeling or feeling something foreign in the eye

It’s essential to treat and manage dry eye syndrome to help alleviate symptoms, so you can focus on what matters. Scheduling an eye exam with us is a great first step and can help us prepare a personalized treatment plan for your visual needs.

Digital Eye Strain & Dry Eye

Many children and adults spend hours each day on computers, tablets, and smartphones. Prolonged screen time can contribute to a common condition known as digital eye strain, also known as computer vision syndrome. One common symptom of digital eye strain is dry, irritated eyes.

When your eyes focus on digital screens, you tend to blink less often, which can cause tears to evaporate faster and lead to dry eye symptoms. Common signs of digital eye strain and dry eye include:

  • Burning or stinging eyes
  • Blurred vision
  • Redness
  • Eye fatigue
  • Difficulty focusing

At Oxford Optometry, we can help you manage and relieve symptoms of digital eye strain and dry eye. Our eye care professionals in Woodstock can recommend personalized solutions, such as lubricating eye drops, adjustments to your work or study environment, and tips for healthier screen habits—including the 20-20-20 rule (taking a 20-second break to look at something 20 feet away every 20 minutes).

If you or your child are experiencing dry, uncomfortable eyes after screen use, book an appointment with our team.
