Monitoring Visual Development
A comprehensive eye exam has many functions beyond determining a prescription for your children’s new glasses. An eye exam can allow our team to check for refractive errors such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism.
Early and frequent eye exams can also allow our team to address conditions such as amblyopia (lazy eye) and strabismus while your children are young to prevent future complications.
Early visual development is an important time for your children and contributes to other aspects of their life such as academic performance or reading their favourite book.
When to Schedule an Eye Exam for Your Children
Your child’s vision is ever-changing, so consistently monitoring visual development and changes is essential. The Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends the following exam frequency for children:
- First eye exam between 6 and 9 months
- One eye exam between the ages of 2 and 5
- Yearly between the ages of 6 to 18
Additional eye exams may be recommended by our team depending on your child’s unique visual needs.
What to Expect During the Exam
Our eye exams are all about the details. Beyond determining your children’s unique prescription, we check for visual skills that are essential for learning, movement, and coordination, such as:
- Eye tracking
- Eye-hand coordination
- Colour vision
- Peripheral vision
- Focusing ability
